In Place Jean Baptiste opposite the Royal school held by RR.PP Jesuits (now the site of Massena High School), the town erected a fountain, fed by spring waters, called Ice Water, which rose not far from Place Armes in the Aubre quarter.
This fountain was named ” Fontaine Marie Christine ” in honour of the dowager queen, Charles Felix’s wife.
It represents 4 tritons with an entwined dolphin tail supporting a sea conch sculpted in white marble , doubtless due to a Greek artist.
It was a donation to the town of NICE by the knight Joseph BREMOND, second Consul of NICE. Firstly, this fountain was in the ARSON family’s garden who owned vast properties near the place which now has their name.
According to tradition, this sculpture was sent from MALTA by the Great Master LASCARIS, to his family who originally owned RIQUIER land (then, bought by the ARSON family).
Now, this fountain is in Jardin Albert I, opposite Saint François de Paule street.
