Fire of the great theater of Nice (OPERA) of 03/23/1881
THE
he theater was created in 1766 by the Marchioness ALLI MACCARANI who obtained the privilege of operating it for 20 years, and bought in 1789 by a society of Nice nobles called the “forty nobles”, who wanted to rebuild it. The project was abandoned following the French revolution which affected the county of NICE in 1792.
Badly operated and dilapidated, the City acquired this Theater and had a new one built in 1826, on the same site according to the drawings of the engineer BRUNATI and under the direction of the architect BERUTO. It was completed in 1828.
A fire destroyed it the evening of a performance of LUCIA DI LAMERMOOR and the last performance of Miss Bianca DONADIO and the new ballet VERA.
This fire claimed 46 victims.
A cenotaph, in memory of the victims, is on the main square, at the entrance to the Castle cemetery.
